Read Romans 3:19-20. What do these verses say about our ability to earn God’s favor? Read Galatians 3:10-12. According to these verses, what is the danger of relying on our performance to earn God’s favor? Read Galatians 3:23-25. Before Jesus died on the cross, what was the role of rules (the law)?
Read Colossians 2:20-23. Why do we like rules? In the Catholic tradition, there are a number of acts that are seen as dispensaries of grace called sacraments (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Reconciliation, Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders and Matrimony). What danger do we face when we rely on rituals and routines to give us confidence that our faith is secure? Read 1 John 5:11-13. What is the basis for having eternal life? How does this differ from Catholicism?
Romans 5:1-2 and Romans 8:1, 32-34. What do these verses say about our standing with God? In spite of what scripture says, why do we still doubt that what Jesus has done is enough? How does that play out in our faith?
